IT WILL KILL YOUR DOGS AND CATS. corgi lovers, dog lovers, cat lovers and general animal lovers:  please do not administer hartz products to your pets. for those of you who have never heard of hartz, here is a little background information. the principal ingredient in hartz brand flick and tea products for cats is a 40-year old chemical pesticide called phenothrin. phenothrin is a synthetic insecticide meant to kill adult fleas and ticks. phenothrin has been banned for some time for use of a lawn pesticide due to its toxicity.  as of march 31, 2006, the sale and distribution of hart’z phenothrin-containing products for cats has been terminated by the EPA. however, EPA’s product cancellation order did not apply to hartz’s flea and tick products for dogs. although numerous deaths of pets who came in contact with hartz’s products have been well-documented, hartz mountain corp. continues to deny any wrongdoing and insists that its products are safe to use.  always, always, always check the package of your flea and trick treatment for the ingredients. three ingredients that you should be wary of are pyrethroid, organophosphate insecticides (OPs), and carbamates. if the ingredient list includes carbaryl or propoxur, the product contains a carbamate. according to the natural resources defense council, the potential dangers posed by these three products are greatest for children and pets. if you see that the product you are looking at has any of those ingredients, DO NOT BUY IT. frontline plus, k9 advantix, advantage, frontline, and frontline plus are all products that should not harm your animals. please spread this post to make others aware of the dangers of hartz products, which will potentially save an animal’s life. more people should know to NEVER buy hartz products.
